Andrew thumbnail 1: Andrew Schneider
Executive Director

As chief executive officer of the ACLU of Connecticut and the ACLU Foundation of Connecticut, Andrew Schneider has overall responsibility for management and operation of both organizations. Before serving as the organization’s Executive Director in Connecticut, Schneider was Executive Director of the ACLU of West Virginia for six years. During his tenure there, the affiliate’s membership more than tripled and its budget quintupled in size. In West Virginia, Schneider spearheaded a successful campaign to pass legislation to combat racial profiling and for those efforts, he was honored by the NAACP with the Freedom Award.

From 1998 to 2001, Schneider served as the Development Director for the ACLU in Connecticut. His other ACLU credentials include Development Director for the ACLU of New Mexico, Campus Groups Coordinator for the ACLU National Office, Board member of the ACLU of Virginia, and founder and president of the ACLU campus chapter at Washington & Lee University where he earned his B.A. in European History.

Legal Director

Sandy Staub brings more than twenty years of trial experience to her new role as Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut. In the early 1990’s, she was Chief of the Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit for the Northwestern District Attorney’s office in Massachusetts. There, Sandy was responsible for trying cases and supervising unit attorneys and advocates, as well as taking a leadership role in creating an interdisciplinary community group organized to maximize available resources to prevent domestic violence. From 1998 until 2004, she practiced law and became a partner at Bulkley, Richardson & Gelinas, LLP, the largest law firm in Western Massachusetts. From 2004 until 2010, she was a partner at Allison, Angier and Bartmon, LLP, a small firm in Amherst, Massachusetts. For ten years Sandy volunteered as a Board Member, including as President, for the New England Learning Center for Women in Transition, an agency providing shelter and services to women and children moving from violent homes into stable environments. In addition to many other community activities, Sandy served as a Trustee for Greenfield Community College and as a Distribution Member of the Western Massachusetts Community Foundation. Sandy graduated from Greenfield Community College, Amherst College and Yale Law School.

David McGuire
Staff Attorney

David J. McGuire joined the ACLU-CT in 2007. McGuire received his B.A. in history from Purdue University in 2003 and graduated cum laude from Western New England College School of Law in 2006. After law school, he clerked for the judges of the Connecticut Superior Court. His primary areas of legal interest are prisoner rights and free speech issues.

Lori Fernand
Development Director

A native of Danbury, Lori moved back to Connecticut with her family five years ago. Previous to her employment with the ACLU-CT, Lori worked as the Program Planner and Human Resources Manager for a community development corporation based in western Connecticut. While living in southern California, Lori worked with several advocacy organizations, for a California Assembly member, as a Congressional legislative aide, and as a staffer in the 2000 Presidential Campaign. She also has had the great honor to work with a Nobel Laureate and on an Academy Award winning documentary. Lori has served in numerous volunteer capacities, most recently as the First Co-President for the Parent, Friends, and Alumni Association for the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, as the Chair of the town of Simsbury’s Recycling Committee, and as host and producer of Trailmasters-a video users-guide to the Santa Monica Mountains. Lori received her master’s degree in Negotiation and Conflict Management and her bachelor’s degree in Communications from California State University at Dominguez Hills.

Jeremy Shafer
Legal Assistant
Jeremy has resided in Connecticut for more than 30 years and is currently enrolled at Manchester Community College in the Paralegal Associate Degree program. He has chosen employment at the ACLU to advocate equality among all people and guard the civil liberties our ancestors bestowed upon us.
Jeanne Leblanc
Communications and Education Manager

Jeanne Leblanc grew up in Connecticut and upstate New York. Before joining the ACLU staff in 2011, she worked for 25 years in Connecticut media, including 17 years at The Hartford Courant, where she became the online editor. More recently, she was a regional editor for Patch Media. She has also worked as a travel writer and blogger and as a Web contractor and consultant. Jeanne holds a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts from Charter Oak State College.

Isa Mujahid
Field Organizer

Isa Mujahid joined the ACLU-CT in 2011. His interests include LGBT rights, immigration rights and work against racial profiling and Islamophobia. He has worked as an Army medic, a legal assistant, community organizer and epidemiological investigator.
