ACLU asks court to block Arizona law

In a suit filed May 17 in federal court, the American Civil Liberties Union asks that a new law requiring law enforcement officers to arrest and detain persons suspected of immigration violation be blocked as unconstitutional.

The new law, SB1070, signed by Governor Janice Brewer on April 23, is scheduled to go into effect on July 28. The ACLU suit is aimed at preventing that.

SB 1070, the ACLU complaint says in part, "attempts to create a legal regime regulating and restricting immigration and punishing those whom Arizona deems to be in violation of immigration laws. It is an impermissible encroachment into an area of exclusive federal authority."
