Under what circumstances, if any, can the Ten Commandments or other sacred texts be taught or brought up for discussion in the classroom?
That's the topic high school seniors from throughout the state are invited to explore in essays submitted for the Ethel S. Sorokin contest, with a first prize of $1,000.
Deadline for submissions is February 2, 2011.
Students are encouraged to study court precedents and to draw on their own experience. Winning entries in the past have been based on students' own opinions and experience as well as on real cases that have shaped current interpretations of the First Amendment's meaning and application.
Essays may be no longer than 1,000 words; electronic submissions are encouraged.
The contest is a legacy of the Center for First Amendment Rights, which was merged into the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Connecticut in 2008.
