First prize in the ACLU/CFAR student essay contest next spring will be named the Ethel S. Sorokin prize, honoring the Center for First Amendment Rights co-founder on the occasion of her 80th birthday.
“It seems fitting to attach your name to the top prize,” ACLU-CT’s executive director, Andrew Schneider, wrote to Sorokin, “since the award recognizes the very best in student First Amendment scholarship – a reflection of your tireless and effective efforts to educate young people about the First Amendment.
“Needless to say,” Schneider added, “those who will be deserving of the Ethel S. Sorokin prize will need to demonstrate through their essay an appreciation of the First Amendment measuring up toward yours -- a tall order, for sure, but one worth striving for.
“On behalf of the ACLU Foundation of Connecticut, we wish you a very happy birthday!”
Ethel Sorokin and her late husband Milton were co-founders of the Center for First Amendment Rights, which in June formally became part of the ACLU Foundation of Connecticut.
Details of the annual student essay contest will be announced in mid-winter.
