Constitution Day -- Volunteers Needed

The ACLU-CT is looking for members to help high students understand and appreciate their constitutional rights. A national survey of 12,000 students revealed that a majority of high school student believe that the Bill of Rights "goes too far"! Alberto Ibarguen, president and CEO of the Knight Foundation, which sponsored the national survey, stated: "Three of four high school students either don't know about or don't care about the First Amendment...that sad statistic must change." That's where the Constitution Day program - and a volunteer like you - comes in.

In recent years, the ACLU-CT has sent volunteer speakers to high school classes to conduct short programs focused on a right guaranteed by the Bill of Rights on Constitution Day. Since federal law requires every school to teach about the U.S. Constitution, many schools are eager to incorporate the ACLU-CT's Constitution Day programs into their social studies/civics curriculum. The schools have been pleased with these programs, and now we hope you will help expand the Constitution Day programs to more schools.

If you are interested in volunteering e-mail pdoyle@acluct.org.

To give volunteers an opportunity to explore the curriculum, the ACLU-CT offers training for all Constitution Day volunteers. During the training you will learn from volunteers who have delivered Constitution Day presentations before, meet other ACLU members, and have some fun. Volunteers must commit to at least three hours on a school day during the week of September 14th - 18th and attend one of the 2-hour training sessions listed below.

  • August 18th, 5:30 p.m. in Hartford
  • August 24th, 7:00 p.m. in Mansfield
  • August 27th, 6:00 p.m. in New Haven

If you would like to register for one of the trainings or get more details obout volunteering, e-mail pdoyle@acluct.org. If you know any high school principals or social studies/civics teachers, please let us know so we can invite the school to participate.
