Our civil liberties have never faced greater threats. Please join a growing grassroots network to launch a New Haven ACLU of Connecticut chapter. We are proud to announce an organizing meeting will be held on October 27, 2008 at 7pm. Directions are included below, if you are interested in attending please call 860-247-9823 x214 to RSVP.
This is an especially exciting development because of the place New Haven has in the history of the ACLU-CT. In 1949, during a Paul Robeson concert in Peekskill, New York, concert-goers were attacked by rioters and a Yale medical student suffered a fractured skull and loss of an eye. The rioters were organized by the American Legion and seemed to have the blessing (if not active support) from local police. The concert was targeting because of the political beliefs of Robeson and his audience. In the wake of this event the New Haven Civil Liberties Council was formed to fight for and secure the basic civil liberties of racial tolerance and the freedom to think. Overtime the organization grew to become the ACLU of Connecticut.
Now on October 27, 2008 at 7pm, ACLU members will come together to form the New Haven Chapter of the ACLU-CT. The meeting will take place at the Unitarian Society of New Haven. If you are interested in attending please call 860-247-9823 x214 to RSVP.
