A Symposium for College Professors
May 1-2, 2009 at Capital Community College in Hartford
Join the ACLU-CT in this a unique opportunity to hear top experts in the field of free speech and discuss the latest First Amendment debates. The day and a half long program, which is organized by the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) and co-sponsored by the ACLU of Connecticut, will include sessions on censorship of arts, culture and new media, hate speech and campus speech codes, press freedoms, academic freedom and student speech rights as well as a historical overview of the First Amendment in the 20th Century.
The information and materials provided in the symposium are specifically intended to aid college faculty enhance curriculum content on free speech issues. The small number of participants will provide optimal opportunities for personal connections, networking and exchange of expertise.

Francis Couvares, Professor of History and American Studies at Amherst College and author of Movie Censorship and American Culture
Chris Finan, President of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, historian and author of From the Palmer Raids to the PATRIOT Act: A History of the Fight for Free Speech in America
Martin B. Margulies, Professor of Constitutional Law at Quinnipiac University School of Law, First Amendment litigator, past member of ACLU and CFAR boards
Svetlana Mintcheva, Director of the Arts Program at NCAC and co-editor of Censoring Culture: Contemporary Threats to Free Expression
Alan Neigher, Expert in entertainment and communications law, libel and slander, and copyright
John Palfrey, Professor at Harvard Law School and co-author of Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives
Nadine Strossen, Professor of Law at New York Law School and former President of the Board of the ACLU
The symposium is open to any Connecticut college faculty member and should be especially valuable to liberal arts and media/communications faculty.
