May 28 - Symposium on Student Speech

Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 7:00 PM

University of Hartford, Wilde Auditorium

Long-time student speech advocate Mary Beth Tinker, whose Supreme Court case established student speech rights, and school policy expert Patrice McCarthy, from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education, will be featured speakers at a May 28 forum - Students and Schools Pushing the Limits of Free Speech in West Hartford.

The Milton Sorokin Symposium, a legacy of the Center for First Amendment Rights, will be held in the Wilde Auditorium of the University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Ave. West Hartford, CT 06117, at 7 p.m. on Thursday May 28.

The symposium topic builds on the momentum of the First Amendment Essay Contest, which asked students, "In what circumstance should a school be able to punish students for their speech off campus." Winners from the essay contest will be recognized at the Symposium and speakers will further discuss the question from two distinct viewpoints.

Reporter Laurie Perez from Fox 61 will moderate. Perez has been honored for her reporting on a variety of topics in Washington, South Carolina and Connecticut. While covering the Donninger v. Neihoff case, where a student lost the privilege of serving as class secretary for comments she made on her personal blog, Perez took special interest in the issues that will be discussed at the Symposium.

Light refreshments will be served following the program.

The event is free, but your RSVP to pdoyle@acluct.org is strongly encouraged.
