Rep. Conyers to Speak at Connecticut Human Rights Conference

On December 6, 2008 U.S. Representative John Conyers, Jr. will address human rights advocates in Connecticut to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The address is the keynote for Fulfilling the Promise of Human Rights: the Universal Declaration at 60, a conference organized by the CT Coalition for Human Rights. The CT Coalition for Human Rights is dedicated to the struggle for peace, economic and social justice, equality, and the protection of the environment. The conference, co-sponsored by the ACLU-CT, will take place Saturday, December 6, 2008, from 8:30 am to 4 pm at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT.

 

Rep. Conyers has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 43 years. In that time he has been a champion for civil rights, including helping to found the Congressional Black Caucus and Chairing the House Committee on the Judiciary. Conyers introduced the Martin Luther King Holiday Act of 1983 and co-authored the Help America Vote Act of 2002. He also lead the passage of the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and the Motor Voter Bill of 1993 in the House of Representatives.

 

Andrew Schneider, ACLU-CT Executive Director, will speak as a panelist during a workshop titled, We Won't Go Back! Dismantling the Landmines of Political Injustice. Additional workshops will include: Connecting Human Right to a Living Wage, The Right to Cross Borders, and Humanizing the US Justice System.
