CNADP, the Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty, is urging letters to local newspapers, and also to legislators, pointing out that the most recent death sentenced handed down in Connecticut illustrates the arbitrariness of the death penalty.
Lazale Ashby was sentenced to death at the end of March for the murder of Elizabeth Garcia, a crime in 2002 when he was four days past his 18th birthday.
Had he committed the same crime four days earlier, he would have been tried as a minor and under Connecticut law could not have been charged with capital murder.
CNADP thinks the jury, which deliberated several days, may have hesitated because of the arbitrariness of Ashby’s situation.
