Opponents of deputizing local police as federal immigration agents will hold a rally Wednesday evening February 6 at 6 p.m. in Danbury. The protest rally, decided on in late January at a meeting of 1,000 immigrants, is timed to precede a meeting of the Danbury City Council expected to adopt such a deputizing resolution. Information from the rally sponsors say it would authorize the city’s police to: - Stop and interrogate any city resident they suspect of being undocumented.
- Access the national database of ICE (the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency) to determine if ICE is looking for the person in question.
- Arrest that person, impound his property, fingerprint and photograph him, and hand him over to ICE.
It would be within the police power, sponsors of the rally argue, to raid homes with a warrant and ICE’s authorization. Free transportation is being planned from Trinity College and Central Connecticut State University. For more information call 860-538-3920. Details in the rally flyer.
