Hartford Councilwoman Elizabeth Horton Sheff urges those interested in the school desegregation suit Sheff vs. O’Neill to attend or drop in on three days of court hearings starting Nov. 6, Election Day, in Hartford Superior Court. “This is the hearing that was made necessary when the legislature failed to approve the recent settlement approved by the Sheff plaintiffs, the State Board of Education and Governor Rell,” says Sheff, mother of Milo Sheff, the lead named plaintiff in the long-running case. “The judge will consider what should be done in the next phase of the implementation of Sheff v. O’Neill remedies.” “Spectators are always welcome in court,” she adds, “and the Sheff plaintiffs and lawyers appreciate having supporters from the community come in to observe. Moreover, it is important that the court and the wider community ‘sees’ that we remain concerned about our children’s educational opportunities, and the violation to their constitutional rights. “It is okay to come in for an hour or two and then leave,” she says. “Court generally runs from 10 am to 4 pm with a one-hour lunch break.” The Hartford Superior Court is located at 95 Washington Street, near the State Capitol.
