Reproductive Freedom
 |
Reproductive decisions are among the most intimate and important decisions a woman will make. Like decisions about contraception, marriage, and child-rearing, the decision to continue or end a pregnancy is protected from government interference by the constitutional right to privacy.
The ACLU supports legalized abortion and opposes regulations that restrict access to this right, such as waiting periods, hospitalization requirements, and parental consent statutes. These restrictions often prevent poor women and women in crisis from gaining access to a safe and legal abortion. Legalized abortion is also the safe alternative to illegal "back-alley" abortion procedures that jeopardize women's health and women's lives.
