Danbury panel OKs ICE deal

Acting against the advice of the ACLU of Connecticut, a Danbury Common Council committee of the whole has voted 19-2 to recommend that the police chief be authorized to have some officers receive training from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE).

Once trained, the officers – most likely detectives, according to the Danbury News-Times, would have the same enforcement powers as ICE agents.

Proponents, led by the mayor, says the dual role is needed because of federal inaction on immigration reform. Opponents worry that the arrangement will lead to racial profiling and will make immigrants reluctant to call for police help.
