Training Danbury police to be agents of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency would be costly, would divert scarce police resources from customary duties, and could lead to racial profiling, the ACLU-CT told the City Council this month. Legal Director Renee Redman warned that entering into a memorandum of understanding with the federal agency would be detrimental to all Danbury residents. Among other problems, she wrote, such a program would “erode trust between all immigrants and the Danbury police.” After receipt of the letter, the City Council postponed action on the proposal.
