The ACLU has warned H&R Block that its TaxCut Online program can’t tell a gay couple that “we don’t support Connecticut civil union returns.” In a case that has drawn national attention, the ACLU told the tax preparer that its response violates state law. Hartford’s Jason Smith and Settimio Pisu, above, said they were told it would cost an extra $150 to have their tax return prepared manually. “This is yet another example of the many ways that civil unions just don’t live up to marriage,” Smith said. “Indignities like these are a constant reminder that there is no substitute for marriage,” said Rebecca Shore, an ACLU attorney. Andrew Schneider, executive director of the ACLU of Connecticut, said there no reason that “the company that likes to claim it’s the world’s largest tax services provider shouldn’t make its products available to everyone.” Read details: H&R Block re Civil Unions Vote in an online opinion poll: http://www.courant.com/news/local/hc-hrblocked0326.artmar26,0,4268053.story See a screenshot of H&R Block’s response to the couple: http://www.aclu.org/lgbt/relationships/34632res20080325.html
