Call Your State Representatives to Pass a Strong Trust Act!

We need you to e-mail and call your state representatives this weekend about the Trust Act.

The legislature is running out of time to pass the Trust Act in the Connecticut State House of Representatives. The Trust Act Now! Coalition has been working in good faith for months to strengthen our state's immigration law in a way that deters bad faith policing and offers real relief to people. Real enforcement is necessary. We heard this week that legislators have plans to water down the bill in a way that disregards all of the coalition's hard work.

We've been asking for people to call the governor, but things have changed this week. Write and call your reps -- email templates and call scripts can be found below.

We need to get the best version of the bill the governor's desk. The bill is waiting to be called in the House, and we need to make sure there are strong enforceability provisions, just as the Trust Act Now! Coalition has called for.

We're counting on you.

Below is an email template we've drafted for you to send to your state representative:

Dear [Rep. Name],

I am a constituent of your district and live in [town/city name]. I’m writing about H.B. 7212, the Trust Act. Our immigrant communities need to feel safe in the place they call home. I support a strengthened Trust Act, and specifically the version of the Trust Act forwarded by the Trust Act Now! Coalition. We need a real, enforceable Trust Act to reinforce protections for immigrants, and ensure that Connecticut’s resources are used for state priorities and not federal immigration enforcement.

We need the version of the Trust Act that gets to Gov. Lamont’s desk to be a real improvement on our already existing policy. What that means is true enforceability, and the provisions asked for by the Trust Act Now! Coalition.

History is watching what you do right now. And we know that the criminal legal system is not always a system of real justice for historically marginalized people, including immigrants.

I am one of thousands of people contacting my representatives to make sure that you all hear this from your constituents. Please hear what your constituents and voters are asking of you and pass the strongest version of the Trust Act. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
[NAME]
