Exponentially increasing the maximum fine that municipalities can charge for ordinance violations is likely to further entrench people, especially families of color, into cycles of poverty. What results is a two-tiered criminal legal system, where income level determines the outcome.

The ACLU-CT fights to protect access to fair and equal justice for all Connecticut residents. When children are in the care of DCF, they receive legal representation through the Public Defender Services. But, once these children turn 18, in most cases they lose access to their counsel.

Protecting residents in long term care facilities is important, but mandatory background and sex offender registry checks will limit the ability of people living with criminal records to get the end-of-life residential care they need.

The ACLU-CT believes that all members of the public have a right to exist and enjoy public space, including people who are experiencing homelessness.

The ACLU-CT believes in a society where all children can flourish. HB 6587 expands Medicaid coverage to include infant and toddler diapers, which will drastically improve health, economic, and educational outcomes for families across the state.

The ACLU-CT supports programs that seek to invest in the well-being of our children and that address the root causes as to why children may end up in contact with the criminal legal system, like mental health challenges.

Everybody deserves a safe and stable place to live. Rent hikes and no fault evictions are displacing people from their homes and communities, fueling gentrification, increasing evictions and homelessness, which disproportionately harms Black and brown working class renters and immigrant communities.

The ACLU-CT believes in a society where all people, regardless of housing status, are treated with dignity, respect, and care. Homelessness is intrinsically connected to public health.

Prosecutors hold people’s lives and fates in their hands. We think that with that enormous power should come more oversight and transparency.
