H.B. 7132, an Act Concerning Non-Safety Related Traffic Stops, is crucial to addressing the enduring racial disparities that exist in traffic stops, particularly for Black and Latine drivers.

The ACLU-CT believes Connecticut, like the rest of the country, must reduce the role, responsibilities, and presence of police, especially in Black and Latinx communities. This means, at minimum, diverting funds from policing to instead build safe and healthy communities.

Police traffic stops are the most common form of interaction between people and police. H.B. 5324, An Act Establishing Secondary Traffic Violations, would help to end low-level traffic stops in the state for violations that do not impact public safety but do increase racial disparities in policing.

One way to shrink policing in Connecticut is through designating secondary traffic stops for low-level equipment and administrative violations and prohibiting police from making traffic stops for those administrative violations.

HB 6878 rolls back too many needed accountability provisions and re-expands opportunities for police searches not even two years after the police accountability bill was enacted.

SB 953 was unanimously endorsed by the Connecticut Racial Profiling Prohibition Project Advisory Board, of which the ACLU-CT is a member. The bill updates our 1999 definition of racial profiling to be more aligned with the rest of the country.

The ACLU-CT believes that in order to reduce the harm that policing is causing communities of color across the state, Connecticut must reduce the role, responsibilities, and presence of systems of policing.
