As an organization that defends the right to vote and believes that enfranchisement is an incredibly important way for people to participate in our society, the ACLU-CT supports this bill, which would designate Election Day as a state holiday.

Connecticut should count people who are incarcerated as residents of their last town of residence and allow people who are incarcerated to vote in that district’s elections.

The ACLU of Connecticut opposes S.B. 422, An Act Concerning a Study of Automated Traffic Enforcement Safety Devices, which concerns red light cameras. The ACLU-CT has been vocally opposed to red light cameras because of the due process, privacy, and racial injustice issues raised by their use.

Connecticut should set limits on automatic license plate reader (ALPR) technology. We support House Bill 6965 to regulate the retention of information collected by ALPR systems and protect the privacy of drivers in Connecticut.

As an organization that protects free speech, the ACLU-CT supports putting restrictions on workplace nondisclosure agreements (NDAs). An employer should not have the right to require a potential employee to sign an NDA regarding sexual harassment or sexual assault as a prerequisite for employment.

Requiring housing authorities to provide voter registration applications to prospective tenants strengthens our democracy by giving more people access to the materials they need to become registered voters.

House Bill 5712 would prevent employers, landlords, educational institutions, insurance companies, and others from viewing information about misdemeanor convictions and certain felony offenses seven years after the date of a final judgment resulting in the person's conviction.

Both Senate Bill 54 and House Bill 5713 help to contribute to a critical, ongoing conversation about the need for Connecticut to address the issue of fair chances at housing for formerly incarcerated people.
