The ACLU-CT opposes legislation that contributes to needless background checks or that erects unnecessary barriers for people living with a record. Conversely, we support legislation that reduces the hurdles of background checks and helps people apply for and receive a pardon.

Voting is a foundation of democracy, a right through which we can protect and preserve our other rights. The ACLU-CT wholeheartedly supports ending felony disenfranchisement entirely and ensuring that voting is truly accessible in Connecticut’s prisons.

The ACLU-CT believes that in order to reduce the harm that policing is causing communities of color across the state, Connecticut must reduce the role, responsibilities, and presence of systems of policing.

One of the biggest injustices faced by people living with a criminal record are the myriad of collateral consequences flowing from that criminal record, which persist for years, even lifetimes, after a person finishes the punishment they were sentenced to.

The ACLU-CT supports meaningful reform to empower children who have been harmed by inappropriate sexual communication from adults. But adding yet another crime to our general statutes is not the best method to address this problem.

SB 1181 would alter how statutes of limitation typically work by starting the clock at the discovery of the commission of the offense, rather than the commission of the offense.

The ACLU-CT opposes House Bill 6637 because it does not address a documented need and it is likely to increase mass incarceration. Victims currently have ample opportunity to partake in the trial and sentencing process in this state.

While no one wants to see any animal injured or killed at the hands of a human, doubling the potential penalty for this category of offense is not the answer.

Deceptive interrogation tactics are outdated and ineffective threats to justice. SB 1071 would be a first step toward ending this deceitful manipulation of children, who are some of the most vulnerable people in interrogations.
