The ACLU-CT believes that in order to reduce the harm that policing is causing communities of color across the state, Connecticut must reduce the role, responsibilities, and presence of police. Police presence in schools is a key link in the school-to-prison pipeline.

The ACLU-CT believes that all children deserve access to education in buildings where children can thrive and have their basic health needs met with potable drinking water, functioning air conditioning, and proper ventilation.

School resource officers are police, just as much as any other law enforcement staff across the state, and their in-school policing has much of the same effects on school communities as municipal and state policing have on the broader community.

With free school meal programs ending at the federal level, Connecticut has the chance to be a leader in the fight to end food insecurity by filling the gap because all children, regardless of their family’s income, deserve access to food.

Access to places of leisure like public beaches and swimming pools have long been sites of discrimination. Fair beach access is an issue that has haunted Connecticut for too long, with restrictive policies that are grounded in politics and discrimination.

The ACLU-CT fights to protect access to fair and equal justice for all Connecticut residents. When children are in the care of DCF, they receive legal representation through the Public Defender Services. But, once these children turn 18, in most cases they lose access to their counsel.

The ACLU-CT believes in a society where all children can flourish. HB 6587 expands Medicaid coverage to include infant and toddler diapers, which will drastically improve health, economic, and educational outcomes for families across the state.
